Burlingame Art Society

Express Yourself

About image
Burlingame Art Society (BAS) was organized in 1957 by a group of artists who wanted to practice the principles of traditional art in our present-day world. Our membership includes men and women actively participating in the pursuit of quality visual arts, while providing friendly relationships with other artists. Among our members are art teachers and talented artists, as well as those who are genuinely interested in a learning experience. Beginners are welcome.

We are artists with the purpose of promoting art, and the appreciation of art, in our community. Our efforts are not only directed to adults, but also to encourage young people to participate in our local community programs.

At present, Burlingame Art Society members exhibit their talents in local banks, the Burlingame Recreation Center, City Hall, Art in the Park, and Music in the Park. Some members also exhibit outside the city at other venues. These venues provide an opportunity for our members to share their talents in public exhibitions.

September - June

1:30 pm - 4:00 pm

Burlingame Community Center - 2nd floor

We encourage each member to bring a framed painting of his/her own to the meetings.

All meetings feature a guest professional artist/instructor who demonstrates his or her own medium. The guest artist also critiques a few paintings picked randomly, and then judges all monthly paintings for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Honorable Mention Awards. A Popular Choice Award is selected by BAS members present at the meeting. Artists who win a 1st Place Award or a Popular Choice Award at the monthly meetings, are eligible to be chosen as Artist of the Year. The Artist of the Year is awarded at the December Awards Luncheon. Artists of the month are also awarded at the December luncheon.

We welcome and invite the public to attend any of our free meetings and to become a member. Light refreshments are served

Awards image
Members of the Burlingame Art Society are encouraged to bring a painting to our Wednesday meetings for our monthly art competition. Our guest artist chooses First, Second, and Third Place awards, as well as Honorable Mention. BAS members choose the winner of the Popular Choice Award. First Place and Popular Choice winners become eligible for our   "Artist of the Year Award."

Here is a quick review of the guidelines:
  • 1. Participants must be members in good standing.
  • 2. Acceptable works of art are: Oil, Watercolors, Pencil, Pastel, Charcoal, Acrylics, and Mixed Medium.
  • 3. There is a limit of one work of art to be entered by a member in any month, but that piece may be reentered in subsequent monthly contests (as long as it does not win First Place or Popular Choice).
  • 4. Your work must be a recent accomplishment from within the last five years.
  • 5. The work must be “finished” dry, and ready for hanging or display.
  • 6. Our award season is December of one year to November of the next.
  • 7. Our “Artist of the Year” is selected at our annual Holiday luncheon from among the monthly “First Place" winners, and winners of the monthly “Popular Choice” awards.
Note: Members who would like to bring more than a single work of art to show, or who would like to bring work to show but without being part of the competition, are invited to display their work in the “President’s Circle” area.
